A few years ago my good friend Jason Bowers gifted me a beautiful book of images simply called, Universe. These striking full page photographs from interstellar and intergalactic space immediately inspired some musical ideas in my mind. After deciding I wanted to write and perform these ideas on classical percussion instruments, i laid out sketches for 5 pieces of music. Each piece serves as a mini-soundtrack and directly correlates to a specific image in this book. Moreover, the timbres directly reflect the images and what they represent. All the compositions are performed in real-time while overdubbing on top of the previous takes. My goal was to keep as much of the performance in tact with very minimal editing. Rather than manipulate the recorded content, I decided to rely more on extended techniques in recording and performing these pieces. Going one step further, I only allowed myself the use of reverb, EQ, and compression while mixing this music...with a bit of distortion on one concert tom track. My goal was to keep the music as "live" as possible. Headphones recommended. Hope you enjoy.
